In August 2016, Instagram launched the Stories concept inspired by Snapchat Stories. Within nine months, Instagram surpassed Snapchat in daily active users. They managed to touch 200 million daily users, and in comparison, Snapchat stands at 160 million daily users.
The growth of Instagram Stories has been phenomenal. Within three months of launch, they received 100 million daily users, and by January 2017, they reached 150 million users. The growth graph continues its upward trend.
Instagram and Snapchat are locked in a fierce competition to surpass each other. In the past couple of months, whatever new feature Snapchat introduced to its users, Instagram matched it with its product updates.
Except for the selfie filters, both the social media platforms have much in common, and Instagram is clearly winning the user’s love.
Snapchat and Instagram Stories
A brief timeline of similarities between the social media giants are given below:
- Stories: Snapchat introduced in October 2013 which Instagram matched and introduced in August 2016.
- Location Filters: Snapchat introduced in July 2014, followed by Instagram in March 2016.
- AR Stickers: Snapchat introduced in April 2016, followed by Instagram in April 2017.
- Create Your Own Stickers: Snapchat made the feature live in December 2016, and within four months, Instagram caught up.
An interesting trend has become visible, which is the time taken by Instagram to introduce new features into their product. The competition is real!
The consumers are the clear winners. Ever since going public, investors and other stakeholders have their eyes zoomed in on 10 May 2017 when Snapchat will present their first quarter earnings. Seeing the change in user base (almost 40 million), perhaps advertisers will choose to prefer Instagram over Snapchat.
